May 8: On this day in 1970, the Let It Be album was released in the UK. https://tinyurl.com/yyzuprjp With the April 10 launch of the McCartney album putting the world on notice that it was all over for the Fabs, the public reception for their "final" release took on a bittersweet air, especially as contrasted with the joyous anticipation normally accorded a Beatle release. Even the rather spartan cover design seemed to symbolize an ending rather than an advance of their collective art. As awful as the turn of events was for fans, in England at least the finality was mitigated by the deluxe treatment accorded their swan song: http://www.rarebeatles.com/photospg/letbx.htm Pressings issued through November in Great Britain came in a box containing a book of Ethan Russell’s photos and excerpted dialogue captured during the sessions for the project.
