May 8: On this day in 1970, the Let It Be album was released in the UK. https://tinyurl.com/yyzuprjp With the April 10 launch of the McCartney album putting the world on notice that it was all over for the Fabs, the public reception for their "final" release took on a bittersweet air, especially as contrasted with the joyous anticipation normally accorded a Beatle release. Even the rather spartan cover design seemed to symbolize an ending rather than an advance of their collective art. As awful as the turn of events was for fans, in England at least the finality was mitigated by the deluxe treatment accorded their swan song: http://www.rarebeatles.com/photospg/letbx.htm Pressings issued through November in Great Britain came in a box containing a book of Ethan Russell’s photos and excerpted dialogue captured during the sessions for the project. On April 11: On this day in 1969, “Get Back”/”Don’t Let Me Down” was issued as a single in the UK. https://tinyurl.com/3tysc542 The first product of the Beatles’ January 1969 labors made public was this single, their first since last August: the longest stretch between singles for them, ever. “Get Back” is unique among the group’s catalog, in that virtually every state of its development, from inception to finished product, was documented on film or tape. Some random musical doodling, prompted by Paul’s recalling George’s “Sour Milk Sea” - “Get back to where you should be” - got things rolling. At one point, his satirizing the racist MP Enoch Powell steered the song onto an anti-immigrant rant: “Don’t dig no Pakistanis takin’ all the people’s jobs - get BACK!” Thankfully, this direction was reeled in before things get too far off track. In the end, the back-to-basics recording, featuring John on lead, was - as Paul put it, “Music to roller-coast by.” (As nature intended, indeed.) “Get Back” peaked at #1 on both sides of the Atlantic. Sadly, this clip, fine though it is, lops off the coda - as did both the original Let It Be album and the post-Spector Let It Be...Naked take.
